Zynismus

Our Daily Free Stream: Sidney Lumet - Serpico.

Good story, but just doesn't seem quite plausible

Yes, I know this is based on a true story despite what you may think when reading the title of this review.

Not a bad film, but definitely dated. There's something about "cop"films from, really any time other than the present that always seem dated to me. i can go back and watch The Godfather (1972) the year before this was made or Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and feel like I'm watching a great film. I don't ever think about when it was made. I think that's because the story revolves around the "bad guys." But, take In the Heat of the Night (1967), it was released the same year as Bonnie and Clyde and yet, because it is a story told from the police's point of view, in modern times, I just don't think it works as well.

I have a theory, my theory goes something like this: because of …

"Serpico" by Yojimbo

Al Pacino stars in a true life story of an honest cop who is stonewalled by his superiors and hated by his peers when he tries to expose the institutionalized corruption of the police department. Pacino puts in a typically strong performance as a man fighting alone against the system, and he and Lumet bring a gritty believability to the proceedings. The supporting characters seemed to flit in and out of the story at random intervals however, which means that Pacino never really gets to share any relationships or dialogue of any real depth leaving it feeling a little dry and uninvolving. I also felt that it concentrated a little too much on his domestic situation which is clearly far less interesting than the action on the streets which combined with the painfully misplaced and corny …

I did not like the movie

I could not stand Serpico because it failed to reach its potential. The acting more or less is fine except for Serpico's second wife she is terrible. The problem is not so much the source material the true story of the cop who wanted to stop corruption is incredibly interesting. The problems come about with the telling of the story and the poor direction. The story wants to basically be a movie without a plot but it has one. It has several random scenes involving things that are not the main plot that do not go anywhere, or least fail to have any depth for me to care. His relationship are shown to be important but not one of them is given the amount of depth or time for it to matter. It basically is he meets the girl then she leaves him later on. Then there are multiple scenes not …

What's this for? For bein' an honest cop?

I was so convinced that Al Pacino's best performance by far was in Scent Of A Woman, but after watching Serpico again earlier this week, I have to rank his performance in this movie a close 2nd!!! Al Pacino plays Frank Serpico, an honest cop who takes on the corruption of the entire police force. With the motto to serve the people, Serpico comes into the force to find that he is the object of all ridicule because of his honesty and dedication. And with a view to not succumb to the corruption he becomes the 'wierdo cop' with whom nobody wants to work. Through innumerable transfers Serpico can't cope with force anymore, and when the police commissioner chooses not to help him, he decides to take matter into his own hands. The irony is that his cause is given notice only when he gets shot …
