One of the best thrillers of the 1970s because of the superior cast, script and director. The opening scene is a classic.

Some of the ending to this mostly suspenseful film feels forced, but the tense ride leading up to the conclusion is worth it. Laurence Olivier creates a memorable, cold-blooded and terrifying villain that holds up in the canon of infamous movie bad guys.

Is it a bit of a stretch? Yes, however it keeps you wanting more thanks the the excellent efforts of Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman is the epitome of a regular guy caught up in extraordinary circumstances and Olivier is a perfect villain.

If examined this film fails completely but as it is it is interesting to watch as you watch it but think too much about it fails harshly. It works as you watch it because it is fast enough and due to the characters especially the very Mengele like Dr. Schell who will make you keep watching just so you can see him get his. Oscar Nominee Best Supporting Actor Laurence Olivier 5/5- Olivier is the best part of the movie by fully being Dr. Schell. He is properly intense and scary in manner but not in an obvious way but rather an incredibly disturbing way, that is very unnerving. He makes a truly great villain in this film.

This is a movie I found to be utterly ridiculous. Everytime something happened it was laughable. Some interesting topics were touched on including the blacklist, but every time something was brought up it seemed like wtf. Overall, I don't like John Schlesinger and will avoid him in the future.
