A dark and unforgiving portrait of the psyche of soldiers at war, without showing much actual combat. The cast itself is fantastic and Sam Mendes knows how to handle difficult subjects with an eye for both dark comedy (to take the edge off) and some genuinely thought-provoking moments. A film that doesn't have to get political to raise questions about the politics of war.

Matter-of-fact account of a young soldier in the marine corps who discovers the agonizing loneliness, isolation and boredom of war when serving in Desert Storm. The characters are well-drawn and a brisk pace provides some riveting moments, but its aftermath leaves too much unexplained. Final Grade: B

I was so excited to see this movie. But once again, it's another case of a movie not doing justice to the book from which it is based upon. Peter Sarsgaard was fabulous, however.

Not my most favorite war movie, but very interesting point of view from the marines. I only gave this 2.5 stars because I'm not sure how realistic it was. I'm sure a lot of the stuff they showed happens, but it could have been hyped up for the hollywood crowd.

A sobering look at a war where there is no actual war. Hardly a bullet is fired, but it's amazing to see what really goes on - and it isn't pretty. It's a realistic look at war and it doesn't try to hype anything.

A very strong 3 star movie, especially one about Desert Storm. It shows some good war type scenes, very good acting, and a good bond is developed by the friends they made. There was nothing it lacked, just showed how boring war can be.
