"Mr. Holmes" by Yojimbo

Yojimbo - wrote on 08/24/2016

An elderly and retired Sherlock Holmes struggles with his failing memory as he attempts to recount his final case. Mr. Holmes is more character study than mystery, trying - and succeeding - in fleshing out the character of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation beyond that of the "Penny Dreadful". Obviously aided enormously by Sir Ian McKellen's exquisite performance, it paints a picture of a man prideful of his intellect but burdened with the pain of regret in his inability to fully relate to his fellow human beings. There is much pathos to this engaging story and sensitive direction combined with an attractively realised portrait of the post-war period make for a beautifully crafted film. Perhaps slightly lacking in plot as the mystery element is more device than intrigue but Mr. Holmes is …

Deerstalker-Hut

A matchless film with an elderly Sherlock

"Take this diary. Each day you don't recall a name or place, make a mark on the page for that day's date. What if I forget to make the mark?"

Once again a movie about the world famous British detective. Apparently they've made already nearly 200 films about this fictitious figure (only Dracula reaches this number). The latest Sherlock films are those with Robert Downey Jr. starring in it. But don't expect mysterious developments, gunfights or wild chases. They could have called it "Mr. McKellen", because this brilliant actor plays the very old Holmes with enormous panache and class. The film doesn't show Sherlock Holmes as a mythical figure but seeks to create a realistic portrait of the man. A surly ex-detective struck by amnesia who spends his last days on a farm in the countryside. …

Old Folk 'Holmes'

Unknown - wrote on 07/27/2015

'Mr. Holmes' presents a new version of the famous sleuth not yet seen. Ian McKellen plays an elderly Sherlock and also, in flashbacks, thirty years younger than that age. The movie focuses on his final years. He's been long retired and his memory is fading. He tries to recall his last ever case so that he can write what truly happened. In the process, he finds out the real reasons why he wanted to forget the ordeal. I won't tell anymore past that. His personal revelation involves grief and regret. The film's theme deals with the unsolvable mysteries of human nature. It connects the multiple time periods shown in a way that makes complete sense and ties them into one thoughtful statement. All of the slow build up focusing on the characters was worth it in the end. And yes, some …

Not the bees!

I think I put all the best Sherlock's in order, here we go:

Nicholas Rowe is the young Sherlock.

Jeremy Brett is and always will be the best Sherlock.

Christopher Lee was the sharp Sherlock.

Robert Downey Jr. was the action Hollywood version of Sherlock.

Johnny Lee Miller was the american Sherlock.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the modern day Sherlock.

And finally Ian McKellen is the old Sherlock.

Mr. Homes show's it's version of Sherlock Holmes is in his twilight years - but looking back on his long, storied career, there is still one case that eludes him and he will not rest until he can unravel its mystery.

I was interested in the idea of a old Sherlock Holmes, I mean it's different from most Sherlock stories and I thought they doing that story were the old …
