One of the many reasons "The Innocents" works is because it was shot in timeless and creepy black & white. It's one of the very top melodramatic gothic horrors.

The Innocents is one of the best adaptations of the often-imitated ghost story, Turn of the Screw. The film uses powerful performances - not only from Deborah Kerr, but from the incredible child actors - and slow-building tension to create some of the creepiest and scariest scenes in a horror film. Dark and poignant.
