Thematically, this film goes a nudge darker than most family centered dramas of it's time. Not too far, but just far enough to make some moments still resonate in the same tone today. Mason gives one of his most memorable performances. The family dilemma is engaging to the point where I could give into the small medical un-believabilty. A consistently entertaining film.

Cortisone addiction in the 50s. James Mason as the addicted one. Hard to watch if you know any addicted people since this is raw. Good one.

There's a lot to nitpick about this film, but I'd suggest just selectively ignoring all those little idiosyncratic problems and silly depictions of science and enjoy an entertaining movie about a man whose personality is enlarged by a "miracle cure" to the point where he feels empowered to state "God was wrong." There's a parable in here about misuse of technology destroying that which it attempts to save, and there's some great Nicholas Ray scenes to be seen (the blu-ray version is quite good).
