It is criminal that this movie is not in the top 1000. One of the best foreign films made. Probably the best foodie movie made (beating out Like Water for Chocolate and Eat Drink Man Woman). My wife and I love this movie. It makes you want to savor food more. And as a bonus, it is an awesome allegory for Catholicism.

The spiritual and restrained people of a northern community encounter the worldly and carnal when a French chef brings a bounteous gourmet feast to their bleak and austere world. They try not to enjoy it as long as they're able, but it's just too much to resist. It's a delight to watch it develop. Lots of food being prepared and eaten, filmed in a delectable way.

I hate to describe a film as "quaint," but, if a term can be applied to a film, this is that film. It's not too preachy, not too complicated, has a good heart and soul to it, and a compelling performance. I wasn't in love with it and it didn't stick with me for a long time, but, at the same time, it works.

I really like this film, due to the wonderful performance of Stephane Audran.
