Our Daily Free Stream: Friedrich Wilhelm Munau - Nosferatu. Murnaus Nosferatu zu sehen ist ganz so, als würde man DEN Vampirfilm an sich sehen. Wir erleben, wie das Genre entsteht, bevor es hundertfach wiederholt und postmodern sezziert wurde. Die Geschichte Draculas, bevor sie lebendig begraben wurde im Selbstzitat. Murnaus Films ist voller Ehrfurcht vor der eigenen Geschichte. Fast so als würde er tatsächlich an Vampire glauben. Anders als seine Nachfolger spielt Max Schreck den Vampir auch nicht pathetisch überhöht, sondern zurückhaltend. Jede Theatralik fehlt in seiner Darbietung, stattdessen erleben wir den Vampir leidend unter einem fürchterlichen Fluch. An important move from a historic perspective.....

I remember watching this movie in a movie club I used to be a member of where they showed weird and rare movies, this was before the days of internet. The idea behind the movie is a good and the story is good, that's why I don't give it half a star. But guys, wake up. This is a movie from 1924. To calling this a masterpiece and a good movie is like saying a toddlers painting is better than a Nordrum painting and support the argument with they are equally good because they could not do any better at the time it was made. It's an interesting watch based on a movie history perspective, but this is really horrible, and not in a good way.
I am against puritism that claim that everything was so much better in the good old days, because it really wasn't. It's an important movie, no doubt, …

The Birth of Horror

Nosferatu is undoubtedly one of the most influential horror films of all time. F.W. Murnau puts together an extremely creepy atmosphere in the film through some excellent cinematography. The score is eerie and brilliant, an absolute must for a silent film such as this one. The special effects are quite good considering that the film was released in 1922. The acting is effective as Max Schreck shows an incredible amount of menace as Count Orlok. However, despite its obvious influence the film is quite flawed. There is very little character development (not too surprising) and the viewer has no opportunity to sympathize with anyone in the film. Regardless, Nosferatu is worth watching because of its influence on modern horror films and creepy atmosphere. Anyone who enjoys horror …
