A bravura of an encore to Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator," this patriotic Nazi-era farce brings the funny while balancing its two contradictory tones.

I appreciate the attempt at wartime satire during actual wartime. Sadly, the opportunity is wasted on jokes that don't take advantage of skewering the relevant subject matter. This film is obviously made by smart people. Thats why it pains me to see a routine skrewball showcase wedged into an espionage WWII plot. The two don't mesh, and both sides suffer from it. I'd be more forgiving if the jokes were funny, but they all fall flat. Predictable comic situations of the time are delivered in sitcom fashion. All that's missing is the happy theme music and overly loud audience laugh for the pauses that are already present.

There's a lot of clever wit and writing in this film which is refreshing. It doesn't rely on easy jokes at all and takes what was probably a bold satirical stand for the time it was made (considering it was made while WWII was still going on.)

I gave this movie a great rating a long time ago. Now, I barely remember it. From what I recall, it is a really good movie that shows signs of originally and cultural fears of the time. I need to see it again to fully understand it.
