A stuffy revisionist Sherlock Holmes movie designed for kids but its sense of humor and whimsy is too dated for casual viewers. The first half is quite boring despite its attempts to be clever and witty but it does pick up near the end. Even then, Barry Levinson who is a good director has to rip off contemporaries like Spielberg for the climax which was very clearly inspired by Indiana Jones.

Decent reinvention of the classic detective, seeing him solve his first crime as a schoolboy. It ups the action side of things to appeal to fans of The Goonies and it's ilk and features some surreal hallucinatory moments and unfriendly natives that reflect the more sensationalist facets of Conan Doyle's original stories. All in all a fun, atmospheric swashbuckler for kids.

This was a film that I really enjoyed as a kid. I remember it coming out right around the same time as other classic kid adventure movies like "The Goonies". I have always thought that this was an attempt at taking the classic character of Sherlock Holmes and trying to find a way to introduce him and his persona to a new generation. Perhaps it was done in an effort to take the older stories from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and make them something that the younger generations would become interested in reading. The story is great, the effects were really well done for their time, and over all I think this is a great way to get kids involved in one of the most well known fictional characters of the ages.
