Better than the live action adaptations, mostly because it's exactly like the cartoon.

Here's some things that make this great -A touching death of an icon -The introduction of new characters -A great guilty pleasure soundtrack -Bot loads of action -The introduction of the first female autobot -Minor swearing -Awesome voice work from Leonard Nimoy and the late great Orson Welles!! As a nine year-old, dragging my dad to see the latest TV-cartoon-turned-movie, I was completely unprepared for the next 90 minutes. Autobots and Decepticons -- DYING onscreen? Spike and Cliff Jumper -- SWEARING? Optimus Prime -- KILLED by Megatron? Some jackass named Hot Rod -- the SAVIOR of Autobotkind? Orson Welles (yes, THAT Orson Welles, in his final performance) as the voice of Unicron, the planet-eating robot? A FEMALE AUTOBOT??? All of this was more than my pre-pubescent mind could handle. Say what you will about how incredibly the effects are in Michael Bay's new CGI masturbation-thon, but for a certain generation of cartoon lovers, there's only ONE Transformers movie...
