The Letter (2012) review

"On that first night of course we didn't know who you were, or what you would do to us, or what you would do to me." A psychological thriller about playwright Martine (Winona Ryder) who casts a new mysterious member named Tyrone (James Franco). Sluggish pace and repetitive dialogues that leads to a supposedly surprising conclusion. By the time one reaches the end one has lost interest. It was refreshing to see Ryder in a complex role coupled with another talent in Franco, who the director taught long before. This reminded the reviewer of a poor Persona by Bergman, if only the plot direction and characters were interesting. It took a more artsy direction instead of focusing on the structured narrative to make it viewable. The Letter is about fiction versus reality, which in this case Persona, Mulholland Drive and Inland Dreams are better choices for the aforementioned themes. A a Ryder admirer, I'm certain she will select a breakout role that would finally bring her back in the game, or even a gold statue which she came close to garnering in The Age of Innocence and Little Women.
