The Crying Game

The Crying Game review

Fergus (Stephen Rea), a member of the IRA, have meaningful brief conversations with Jody (Forest Whitaker) who is held prisoner by the group. One of the few stories discussed by Jody is about the Scorpion and the Frog. Jody dies accidentally after a chase and Fergus searches for Dil (Jaye Davidson). Fergus uses the alias “Jimmy” and meets Dil. She sings “The Crying Game” in a bar while Dave bothers her. Jude (Miranda Richardson) comes back to see Fergus to use his services again.

The movie won Best Screenplay, which was very original for its time. A few memorable quotes: Fergus - “As the man said, it's in my nature.” Col – “Who knows the secrets of the human heart?” Dil – “Funny the way things go.” “Nothing is wise.” The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Actor in a Leading Role (for Rea), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Davidson) and Best Director. The cassette played and wardrobe shows that the picture is dated and pace seems to slow a bit after the big twist. It had a good mix of drama, action and psychological thriller. Score was apt and performances splendid. The Crying Game is about love, acceptance, and one’s nature of personality.
