To be reductionist, writing a psychological thriller boils down to 'pick an obsession (especially one that would thrive in a domestic environment) and gradually crank it up until your protagonist draws blood, either their own or another's'. Within that recipe lies vast potential for character study, mystery, scares, histrionic performances, and visuals of a most macabre nature. Bug is what happens when you follow the recipe and for no discernable reason it tastes awful. Looking back, perhaps you skimped on one ingredient (in this case, charting a plausible journey from loneliness to folie à deux in a timespan of week) and overcompensated with another (helicopter sounds), but fundamentally you just didn't know what you were trying to accomplish from the beginning and now what's left you have to eat.
