The premise for an enjoyable buddy comedy is there, but the execution is too tired to pull many laughs out of the film. Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy are charming and their chemistry ekes out its share of smiles from a parade of substandard scenes. The problem is, eventually, the film's holey and cliched plot and paper-thin supporting characters start to overwhelm the natural comedic timing of its leads. Add a tacked on, unearned moralistic conclusion and Identity Thief is merely a middle of the road, slightly amusing typical road trip comedy.
