Another prestige project that wastes a solid cast and winds up too pretentious for its own good. it alternates between B&W cinematography in the present and full color in medieval flashbacks. That part was interesting if a little distracting. The first half of the movie is edited strange. But I still liked the dialogue and how the characters played off one another. There is a germ of an intriguing idea about the mob fighting over a priceless manuscript. But as the movie progressed, the body count started to climb and the cast became less interesting. By the third act, it was a complete mess.
