A former soldier has to rescue his ex-girlfriend turned singer from a biker gang in this vintage action-musical. Like other Walter Hill movies, it’s a simple story, maybe a little too simple. But it’s hard not to enjoy the songs and the cast isn’t slouching. The retro fifties vibe and vaguely dystopian setting is a cool set-up.
Rick Moranis is pretty darn funny as a caustic and smarmy wise-guy. A young Willem Dafoe is menacing as the gang leader while both Diane Lane and Amy Madigan are good in their respective roles.
The weakest link unfortunately is the lead Michael Pare who looks like a solid enough romantic hero but his delivery is very flat. Maybe if it was a different lead actor like Kurt Russell it’d have done a tad better?
