Damned, The ( caduta degli dei, La )

Visconti’s nihilistic epic about the rise of Nazism is harrowing and haunting to sit through. Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling are both solid. But it’s Helmut Berger who stands out as the diabolically evil degenerate who’s empowered by his fascist surroundings. It’s a quietly frightening film that is often difficult to sit through. There are moments that liven up the plot like the climacteric recreation of the Gestapo’s Night of the Long Knives. But it’s dull when it’s not unpleasant.
