Gorgeous production design and snazzy costumes overwhelm this rather underwhelming gangster flick. Richard Gere looks the part for a matinee actor like Clark Gable or Warren William. But his character is not interesting, especially compared with Hines' subplot. The ensemble cast is hit or miss. James Remar, Bob Hoskins, and Fred Gwynne as the villainous mobsters are a lot of fun. Diane Lane looks like a 20s flapper but she's very shrill and shallowly written.
