Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010)

The Cheese Touch

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" fell under what many family comedies fall under, and that is the protagonist lacked any redeeming quality at all, which made it exhausting to attempt to connect with him. The repulsiveness of the character's personal ethics made me want to leave the theatre, as I felt more for his friends than for him. He wasn't wimpy, simply mean-spirited. Another major problem, that many films of this genre share, is that it didn't take its ideas all the way, lacking the charm and realistic flair that films by Chris Columbus (such as "The Goonies," "Home Alone," or "Harry Potter") by not adding any sort of vulgarity and toning down reality by surrealizing it into idealistic settings. Not impressive.
