Jersey Boys

Entertaining but Flawed

The Rotten Tomatoes rating for Jersey Boys is around 50% right now, and I can see why; Jersey Boys is a very divisive film. I don’t just mean Divisive in how its audience likes it either; the film is divisive within itself. The first half is a light hearted musical crime comedy, and the second half is just sort of lame. The movie soars in one scene, but will suffer to stay afloat in the next.

Jersey Boys fatal flaw is in thinking that it’s supposed to be more then just a fun time. The first half is pretty much just that, it’s chock full of fun over the top characters, entertaining set pieces and, of course, music. The second half on the other hand tries to make a serious movie out of itself with dramatic moments and over the top serious emotions that it can’t really pull off. There are moments of true brilliance in Jersey Boys, but for the most part it just can’t quite reconcile its many faces.

I thought the acting, while a little bit over the top at times, was mostly serviceable, and I thought that Clint Eastwood’s directing added an intelligent energy to the movie that kept it entertaining even in it’s worse moments. So ya. . . . I enjoyed it, even if I admit that it’s flawed. It’s not a bad movie choice for your evening at the theater, but not a movie that I would go out of your way to see either.
