Super Mario Bros.

I'm Sorry Your Movie Is In Another Castle

I see this movie as the pioneer of video game movies; especially outside of the thriller/horror movies these days (Resident Evil; Doom; Silent Hill; etc). But it is known as the first video game movie....so pioneer works.

I think the most enjoyable factor about this movie was the cast. Major kudos to Mali Finn for her choices in casting this feature. Bob Hoskins as Mario was the perfect choice. Loved that they had the Mario Brothers as New York Italians; as it is suppose to be in the game. The movie had them NY, even the cartoon had them NY. Fast-forward to the N-64 game and Mario has a voice like he's some illegal immigrant right off the freakin' boat from Italy. What's up with that?

John Leguizamo wasn't the carbon copy Luigi like we would have expected from the game; but I like what they did with him. Younger, fresher Luigi. Plus who wants to see two old Italians fighting evil? It would be like a G-rated video game version of the Sopranos.

Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. Sure, we all would have loved to see a giant lizard bad-guy; but it was '93. I'm surprised they even had Yoshi. Not Hoppers best role; but every actor is allowed to have their fun movie.

I think this was the movie that began my little crush on Samantha Mathis...playing Princess Daily. Yes, not Princess Toadstool; but hey....they had Yoshi too.....so it's not like they said "We can only make this movie based on 1 of the video games."

I don't think there is anything too negative you can say about this movie. I mean, unless you look at it like you would Casablanca or Rear Window or dare I even say well....any movie trying to win an award. This is not an academy movie.

This was a movie made for the fans and I think they did one hell of a job in making it.

I just know I'm a bit disappointed that they never got to make a sequel. Though I can only imagine the double-meanings in the movie if they were to make one these days.....come on...Italians getting power from mushrooms and flaming flowers. It would be like watching the Mario spoof on Robot Chicken.
