A harrowing experience. It's almost physically painful to watch at times. Rosetta is a deeply troubled person, one whose decisions are often frustrating, even angering. What makes it all worthwhile, however, is the immense love and compassion that the Dardennes have for their principal characters. An utterly compelling film - and one I return to every year or so to once again take that exhausting journey into the world of darkness and light.

Ew, rosetta. The best thing about this is the Dardenne Bros.' discovery of Emilie dequenne.
