Plot: Having taken over the deep sea operation from his father, Jiuming Zhang is hoping that exploration will lead to new ecological breakthroughs. He also has his own meg he is trying to tame in captivity - something the rough survivalist Jonas Taylor is firmly against. But it turns out his team isn't the only one interested in what the deep holds - and they are willing to kill to keep their operation intact - as well as stirring up even more trouble from the trench. -- Chris Kavan

Entertaining for sure, but veers too far into comedic territory with little of the tension that made the first film that much better. Hopefully if we get a third one in the future, they don't play things as safe and get back to the more horror-themed roots.

I cannot believe Ben Wheatley directed this. It's like if Robert Eggers made Rampage with the Rock, or Panos Cosmatos made Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. This does feel like one of those SYFY original movies but with an actual budget. It got to a point where so much is happening on screen, it starts to get funny.

Wacky monster movie that is weirder than expected

Meg 2: The Trench has no brains but a lot of balls to be as batshit crazy as it is. I don't know how else to say it.

It's one of those sequels that has twenty ideas for a story and uses ALL of them. It features not just one giant prehistoric shark but three of them. Plus a kraken sized octopus. And we got creepy little dinosaur-like reptiles scurrying about. There's even an early scene that is clearly meant as a 'take that' to JURASSIC PARK. Bold as brass, says I.

The story picks up years after the first movie and Jason Statham is raising the precocious daughter from the first movie on his own while still keeping an eye out for those pesky Megalodons. But an evil businesswoman is illegally exploiting the mega sharks' territory for profit (the fiend) and now there are more …
