What's supposed to be the next big leap into Marvel's new phase feels more like a minute scuttle back into places we've already been. There's so little to say about "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" besides it's just another forgettable diversion composed of noise, lights, and cinematic chaos.

Safe but totally serviceable entry into the MCU

'Quantumania' is on the lower end of the MCU but it doesn't mean it's a bad movie. It's more of a standalone adventure that happens to feature not one but two generations of Ant-Man and the Wasp. The CGI effects for the Quantum Realm and the various action scenes look pretty; and lead to some rather original designs for the settings and creatures.
Paul Rudd is great in this along with Jonathan Majors as the new villain Kang the Conqueror. For all this movie's faults, Kang is not one of them. He's menacing in a subtle way but can be bombastic when the moment calls for it. With Rudd as Scott Lang, he's likable as usual and his motivations are immediately sympathetic. Returning cast members Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Evangeline Lilly are not bad in this but it seems like …

QuANTuMANia

"Let me make this easy for you. You will bring me what I need, or I will kill your daughter in front of you and make you re-live that moment over and over again, in time, endlessly, until you beg me to kill you. Do we understand?"

What a menacing line from a great scene presence of the villain, Kang.

On the other hand, this is Marvel at its lowest. I'm starting to find the Multiverse saga to be boring and messy. If this is the quality that Marvel is now going for, then I am so ready for its downfall. I HATED what they did with the character of Kang in the final battle, which now makes him less of a threat to the Avengers.

I felt so sorry for Micheal Douglas, who looked so confused at what he is supposed to be looking at or what lines he had to deliver.

I've watched movies …

A Small Step for the MCU

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/10/2023

The MCU has had its ups and downs but I have to admit that Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantumania is truly the first time I've felt the long-running superhero franchise has felt like it's just spinning its wheels. Underneath the flashy CGI, crazy characters and the introduction of the next biggest bad (Jonathan Majors does kill it as Kang), Quantumania largely feels a bit empty.

The two previous Ant-Man films have been some of the most fun (along with the Spider-Man series) thanks in large part to every-man Paul Rudd just being himself - affable, a bit of a goofball and overall a just likable guy. Heavy hitters like Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeifer bring a bit of class to the whole affair and Evangeline Lilly is the strong female counterpart. Quantumania does have some lighter moments but, …
