A great premise for a tense thriller begins promisingly with the attacks set in motion. But the characters are interchangeable outside of their one-note personalities. You get the nice American, the mean European, the plucky Indian, the tough cop, the mean terrorist, etc. It's too bad because the real life Taj Hotel attacks were such a gripping harrowing event.

While "Hotel Mumbai" is a very Hollywood account of a real tragedy, it isn't hard to value for its gripping retelling of the attack.

At first, I felt like the thrill and suspense cinematic efforts water down the real story behind the Taj Hotel attacks. But towards the end, I appreciate the nuances given to each character, the Muslims, the European and Americans, the Indians, that their character development went beyond their religion, ethnicity and nationality. Not all, but most of the projected protagonists in this film end up showing their human side, them being a mother, a father, a daughter, a son, or simply a dedicated hardworking hotel staff, outside their religious and personal beliefs. I'm not sure if it's just me but the phrase "The guests is our God" is a powerful metaphor on how above all regardless of who you are, people are meant to serve others regardless who they actually consider to be their God.
