Everything about this film is beautiful - from the tortured and emotional story, to the evocative score (with especially haunting songs), to the vibrant cinematography. This is a poignant landmark of Asian cinema that will stick with you long after viewing.

Interesting to see Yimou's early work. 10 years before Hero, he is using light and color as defining elements of this tragic story. Very memorable.

Beautiful examination of sexual politics in China told with excellent detail; Zhang Yimou's direction and Gong Li's performance are superb. Final Grade: A-
