The film really benefits from some knockout casting - both the main cast (Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase and Matt Wood as John Belushi) and some big name cameos - especially J.K. Simmons as a slimy Milton Berle and Matthew Rhys as the hot-headed George Carlin. The only issue is that with a cast this size, you just want more but, hey, it did a great job encapsulating the absolute madness (even if some stuff didn't necessarily happen THAT night) along with the sheer luck needed to pull off the first Saturday Night Live. It even had some excellent music cues. All in all, a very fun watch.

Madcap recreation of the iconic series' premiere in 1975. The cast is excellent and the editing is pretty good for the most part. Though I will say, there are others who are underutilized despite pitch-perfect casting. But on the flip side, the feeling of chaos and anxiety in showbiz is captured perfectly.

The phrase style over substance popped into my mind more than a few times watching "Saturday Night," but that doesn't discount the effectiveness of its frantic and anxiety-inducing energy. It's still a fascinating, fly-on-the-wall curio that will appeal even more to those familiar with SNL or with an interest in T.V. history in general.
