Moody and effective crime-thriller that harkens back to stuff like “Se7en” and “The Silence of the Lambs”. I respect it for taking itself seriously. Shailene Woodley does fine in the Jodie Foster role. But she was outshined by her costar Ben Mendelsohn.

It doesn't subvert the crime drama by any means, but thanks to strong performances from lead Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn, along with a sharp story, it gets the job done. It's especially telling how the people in charge put a spin on things - and I'm sure it happens exactly like that with most senseless acts of violence and mass shootings.
