Jennifer Hudson is very good casting for Aretha Franklin. Her musical talent carries a lot of this movie. Marlon Wayans has a dramatic turn as her domineering husband Ted White. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel as far as musical biopics go. But fans and casual audiences will like it fine.

As music biopics go, "Respect" is on the upper end thanks to a story that celebrates its subject, while also connecting events from her life and her art with a common theme of personal independence and empowerment.
