Scorsese's epic length swansong to the crime genre is as much about friendship as it is about the usual stuff you would expect in a mob movie. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci are all great. Does it need to be three and a half hours? No I wouldn't think so..

This is Scorsese in his element here, and no one does it better... except for a younger Scorsese. As handsome and introspective as this production is, nothing about it feels groundbreaking or bold, apart from the runtime (for a 3 1/2 hour film, the pacing is oddly excellent). Despite the importance of its themes, this is fundamentally a nostalgia movie; a chance to see some of the 20th century's greatest crime movie actors assembled by the quintessential gangster film auteur. It is by no means thematically anemic, but it isn't all it could be. Nevertheless, it is good, and it is worth the watch.

After almost 25 years, Martin Scorsese has returned to his gangster epic roots. Perfectly composed and starring three classic stars in return to form roles, "The Irishman" is an easy contender for best film of the year.
