Man, I felt so bad for the dad character. He took an absolute beating from these American alligators.

Although I think the premise is utterly ridiculous, Alexandre Aja turns to this B-movie thriller up a notch by the cramped quarters and human-chomping gators. Plus, Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper make a good daughter/father team. A fun ride all around.

Alexandre Aja demonstrates how to direct a B-movie to its true modest potential. Crawl is a consistently entertaining thriller thanks to its claustrophobic environment, and scary threatening monsters in the form of man eating alligators. Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper are fine but the ferocious gators are the real stars.

"Crawl" definitely delivers on its "Jaws"-like premise, but it's hard to be afraid of such bad-looking special-effect gators.

On a cinematic level there is a great deal to admire here, with some elegantly executed high-octane thrills and chills, but regrettably all that means precious little when the script has characters behave in such a willfully stupid manner that you're too distracted by your own cries of frustration to notice. When writers contort their characters and situations to such unnatural degrees just to set up suspenseful scenarios and scares, all they really accomplish is reminding their audience that these people aren't really in danger of being consumed by alligators or treacherous weather because, ultimately, they're not remotely real.
