I haven't been this engrossed in a movie for (what feels like) a while, and it all takes place through computer screens and smartphones. Searching is a solid modern thriller where the technical can still tell a story with rich emotions and characters. John Cho is superb.

Even if you were to strip away its style method, "Searching" would still be an astonishing and attention-grabbing mystery thriller with an effective amount of human depth and emotion.

This is a brilliant film. I remember watching this form of storytelling in a Modern Family episode, but this one nailed it. I was thinking that the story would be as flat as any other search and rescue movies, but this film started and finished strong. I was teary-eyed after the opening montage, and everything went as exciting as things started to unfold. And I liked the ending. Simple yet meaningful. Just wow.

Searching is a triumphant exercise in a new form of storyelling, done entirely from a computer screen. Email, videos, text messages, and webcams are the means of communicating the plot to viewers. Surprisingly enough it works. The movie itself is a solid enough "missing persons" type of thriller which minus the gimmick would only be okay at best. Still, John Cho acts his butt off and proves himself a good leading man for dramatic material like this.
