An entertaining take of the CIA involvement in Nicaragua's drug issue. The direction was clever, making it look light while telling a heavy serious material. Tom Cruise is just entertaining to watch.

Having watched several movies and/or TV series depicting all or part of the rise of Pablo Escobar, and the many people involved, American Made was still a fascinating look into one of those men, Barry Seal. While Cruise may not look like Seal (much as he also doesn't look like Jack Reacher per the books) he still plays him with his typical charm, with equal parts luck and skill accounting for his rise and ultimate fall. Liberties are taken, for sure, but overall I think it hits more than misses.

A slick high flying tall tale about a daredevil pilot named Barry Seal (Cuise) and his misadventures south of the border in Central America. True life character Barry Seal humorously narrates how he was hired by the CIA, the drug cartels, south of the border rebels, and law enforcement officials at various points of his career. Domhnall Gleeson costars as his shady CIA contact while Sarah Wright makes a solid presence as his loyal but leery wife. Doug Liman keeps the mood light but with a slight dark undercurrent as with many movies based off real life stories.
