The Fly (1986) review

Daniel Corleone - wrote on 11/05/2012

A mixture of horror, sci-fi, romantic-drama-comdey elements all rolled into one. Second time viewing for this movie proves that its legacy will never become dated or dull. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a science who is working on something "that will change the world and human life as we know it." He meets a journalist named Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis). The score and direction brings to life the thrilling moments aside from the gory and effective effects/make-up. Engaging and most accessible from start to its suspenseful ending. Geena Davis was heart-wrenching and Goldblum just perfect for the role, physically and skill-wise. Screenplay was impressive with lines: Stathis - "It could be contagious. It could turn into an epidemic." Veronica - "Tests can't guarantee anything." …

The Fly.
Directed by David Cronenberg, famed for his over-the-top gore effects, The Fly tells the sad love story between scientist Seth Brundle and journalist Veronica, and of Seth's hideous transformation after a teleportation experiment goes wrong, mutating him on a molecular level into the 'Brundlefly'.

I saw the remake a few hours after the original 1958, and full of plot holes as it was, the original as fun in a cheesy b-movie way. But then I watched Cronenberg's visceral remake and was astounded. Taking the basic idea of the original and making based around a love story more than anything, Cronenberg has created a much-loved and widely aclaimed monster film with a heart. Yes, it is bizarrely visceral and gory in some parts, but it lends itself perfetly to the very real idea of …

Could have been better

"Seth" is a scientist who has made every Trekkie's come true -- he has invented a a transporter device. However, like every invention made in a movie, something goes drastically wrong. When taking the next step in the experimentation of the device, he uses himself as the guinea pig -- and has his DNA fused with a fly which has snuck into one of the transporters with him.

And to complicate things, his journalist girlfriend, "Veronica" (Geena Davis), is carrying "Seth's" possibly deformed child. And she seeks help from her former boyfriend, "Stathis" (John Getz).

This has got to be the worst movie I've seen that has only one thing going for it -- good make-up effects.

The first problem is that it is very slow. I found myself checking email and message boards pretty frequently. …

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

My first impression of David Cronenberg's masterpiece, The Fly, was that it was just another disturbing sci-fi picture that had bad special effects and an already done cliche story. I was extremely mistaken. From the charmingly twitchy Seth Brundle, to the agressively mutated Brundlefly, to one of the most heartwrenching film endings of all times; The Fly is a prime example of what makes a movie great and what makes people love them. To my knowledge it seems as though most movie critics overlook The Fly for what it is. For the most part it received high ratings at its release as far as I know, but The Fly is really a hidden gem in movie history. I really cannot say one negative comment on it. The special effects, which may seem barbaric to todays standards, are perfect for the …
