David Cronenberg ist einer der ganz wenigen Regisseure, dessen Werk spontanen Angriffen mühelos stand hält: Sein Mix aus schwarzer Komödie und unverfrorenem Melodram kommt so delikat daher, manchmal auch so abstossend, dass wir einfach nicht wissen können, ob ers ernst meint oder doch nicht? Die Antwort lautet dann gewöhnlich: Beides. Lange wurde er als Horror-Filmemacher beschrieben und seine Faszination für Körper Invasionen und die Fragilität des Fleisches scheinen diese Etikette auch zu bedienen. Cronenberg your so much better then this.
Maps to the Stars follows the lives of the Weiss family - pure Hollywood royalty - including the father, a self-help guru, mother who dotes on 13-year-old Benji - fresh out of rehab and daughter Agatha a recently-released pyromaniac.
I heard some mix things from Maps to the Stars and that's mostly the reviews it got and yes I do read other critics reviews and other websites like Rotten Tomatoes, but at the end of the day you can't trust RT sometimes, I mean Sharknado get's a 82% ?. I also found out that this movie won Best Actress at The Cannes Film Festival and the best actress went to Julianne Moore which she beat out Anne Dorval for Mommy, in which I disagree with that and I will tell you why later on. 'Maps to the Stars' pulls back the curtain of Hollywood to show the dysfunctional personal lives of it's most famous in the entertainment industry. And I mean ABSURDLY dysfunctional. A group of famous starlets, including one disastrously disturbed and self-righteous family, are shown in their day-to-day lifestyles while on the verge of severe mental, emotional, and physical breakage. All of the characters here are completely un-relatable and unlikable. They are terrible to themselves and everyone around them. It's like the worst stories you hear of bad celebrity behavior being amplified beyond rational belief. Some reviewers find the result satirical, while others think it's a disturbing 'what if' scenario or cautionary tale, and more think it's a hateful indictment. I believe the …
