I had not read the book, so I didn’t have any expectations beforehand. Reading the book would have prepared me for the format. Not a bad collection of stories, it was nice to see the women fight back and overcome their situations.

This movie was like a musical but instead of songs there was poetry. It was a little odd at first, but you get used to it once you catch on. The acting was amazing. Thandie Newton deserves and Oscar, it's a shame that she wasn't even considered. She was amazing. The film itself was pure drama. It was a little bit too much drama. Some of it was was just so unbelievable. However, if you like melodrama in movie then it's perfect.

I think I liked this movie. But, as with all movies that have poor black people in them, you have to wonder what kind of message it's sending. However for pure drama, you can't beat this movie.

This movie is alright. It's worth watching, but it didn't exceed my expectations. You might like it if you like poetry. For me I was mostly interested in the plot about the lives of the different women, not the poetry even though the movie is based on a series of poems from 1973. But it does have good drama scenes and an intriguing plot about some of the issues black women face. However this movie isn't for the faint of heart as there are some scenes that are hard to watch.
