Using mostly non-professional actors, and choosing to shoot extended, uncut sequence of prison escape, Jacques Becker crafts an escape story that feels tense and realistic. The danger and great effort that goes into the documented prison escape is communicated well and the film's inevitable conclusion is poignant and unique.
