A change of pace for director John Ford, better known for westerns and war films. Instead we get a romantic epic set in the exotic South Seas. Jon Hall and Dorothy Lamour play two lovers separated by the law when the former is sent to a penal colony. His repeated attempts at escape only serve to aggravate the colonial governor (Massey). It's well shot and not badly acted. But it's not quite as sweeping or engaging as it might had wanted to be. The much touted special effects during the climactic disaster sequence is not that impressive looking.

The Hurricane is an insanely repetitive movie. It shows a native man wrongly imprisoned try to escape over and over again, and a good doctor and others trying to convince the by the books governor to let him go. It is the same thing over and over again, the escape than the plea and repeat until that is the big Hurricane sequence than it is over, and not rather interesting. There are good performances from Raymond Massey, and Thomas Mitchell, and the big special effects sequence is quite well done but overall the film amounts to little.
