A Squad of British soldiers on manoeuvres in the Scottish Highlands are ambushed by a pack of werewolves. Neil Marshall's knowing homage to the werewolf movie cleverly combines the myth with other horror formulae to create what is essentially An American Werewolf In London crossed with Predator. Thanks to some naturalistic dialogue, funny banter and believable performances by the no-name cast, the soldiers feel like real squaddies and Marshall's efficient direction cranks up the suspense to just the right level despite some obvious budget limitations. The photography is rather TV standard and the effects hardly cutting edge, but it's a case of lack of money being the mother of invention and thanks to a knowing script, what emerges is a hugely entertaining horror with a wide streak of …

Wishy-Washy at Best

Hmm, this seems to be a cult favourite of horror fans. In the end, I didn't know exactly how to feel about it. I didn't know if the filmmakers wanted the audience to take the film seriously or lightly because I do see some homage to the 70's and 80's horror flicks ("An American Werewolf in London," anyone?). I did enjoy some scenes when they were in the house as they try to escape and/or kill the werewolves. But, at the same time, I felt like the entire movie dragged on like there's no tomorrow. The whole military set-up seems all too forced so that the characters will have weapons they can use to fight back. I wondered a couple of times if the picture would've been better if they did not have any guns. Because once characters have guns, all they can do is shoot until they run out of …
