Read the writing on the Wall-E

When my friends were more eager to see "Wall-E" than "Wanted", the seeds were planted for me to resist its charms. When it earned seemingly unanimous praise from the critics, my seeds experienced a massive growth spurt. And when there was Oscar talk a mere four days into its run, my plant was of "Jack & the Beanstalk" proportions!
With a built-in defense this strong against a movie, it would be impossible to break through completely when I finally saw it. Out of principle, I would not have given it a "perfect" rating. And after pondering it for a day, I think my "3 stars" is fair; I'm going to stick with it. "Wall-E" is by no means flawless, at least in its entirety.
The first "chapter" is amazing. It is simply some of the best filmmaking i've experienced in quite a while. …

A new masterpiece from Pixar

The film takes a page from the beginning of cinema, emphasizing its visuals over any kind of dialogue. While Wall-E and EVE are constantly making sounds, few words are ever shaped. And the film is all the better for it; the bleeps and squeaks become far more endearing than if Wall-E actually spoke. Extended coherent dialogue isn’t even introduced until well into the film when the humans actually appear, and everything that comes before it is sheer genius. Wall-E wheels across the deserted planet with his cockroach friend and with a single raise of the eyes, we know everything about him. His romance with EVE is the purest film romance since Charlie Chaplin gazed at the blind girl in CITY LIGHTS. The climax of the film (an emotional climax, rather than action-oriented) rightfully …

Wall-E Works Robotic Magic

This is a very much adult film masked as kids' movie. Sure, there are going to be laughs along the way, but the serious messages in the film take precedent this time around.
The visuals are simply amazing, even for Pixar. This is first and foremost a visual movie, as there is scant dialogue for pretty much the first half hour or so. Wall-E is a fine counterpoint to all the evil AI portrayed in most films. He reminds me of R2D2, and looks like a cross between the Short Circuit robot and E.T. It's obvious he has been alone for a long time and has developed his own personality - his home is a collection of spare parts and plenty of memorabilia (lighters, rubber ducks and a well-worn copy of Hello, Dolly!). A kids movie that is hardly kid friendly where most of the time is spent without dialog and nary a furry animal in sight, it must be Pixar. In a time where studios realize what cash cows animated kids movie can be and are saturating the market with as much of them as possible regardless of the content as can clearly be witnessed in the trailers leading up to Wall-E. It should come as no surprise that Pixar once again scores big. Despite the marketing leading us to believe that is is standard kids stuff it cannot be further form the truth. The ideas explored regarding pollution, love, our reliance on technology and humanity are well over the head of most kids and some of the best laughs come at the expense of the humans who are clearly to comfortable with themselves and their …
