A portrait of sexuality versus love, the bold themes and terrific performances from a young Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche help this passionate romance set against a dramatically changing continent last its elongated 3-hour running time.

A slow burn of a movie that relies more on letting the various nuances and relationships of its characters settle before moving towards an eventual and evocative conclusion. Starts slowly, but is never boring and the context of the explosive relationship of the leads against a Russian revolutionary uprising works very well.
