Crop Circles @ #42

Directed by my favorite director M. Night Shyamalan. I have to say that before seeing this movie, I was bracing myself for a disappointment due to mixed reviews. I must now say that I found the movie to be quite remarkable, well executed, and nicely crafted. M. Night Shyamalan rightly deserves respect for putting out a film with a lot of his personal touches instead of putting out something that people expect to see. While `Signs' will have scenes of the traditional or convention variety, it is the ambiance of the scenes that is unique.Shyamalan made good use of the films lead actors. Mel Gibson as recent widower Graham Hess, and Joaquin Phoenix as the younger brother Merrill Hess are both well cast and interesting to watch. They both brought a lot to the movie. Shyamalan himself has a …

Signs

I forget the greatness of this movie sometimes. The more I watch it, the more I am impressed with Shyamalan's script, camera work, and influence from such legends like Alfred Hitchcock. This film is not your typical frightfest. In fact, the villains are fully revealed toward the end, which made it all the more effective because the audience cannot stop but wonder how the enemies look like. I admire how this movie is not just about suspense. It's about loss, family, faith, sacrfices, and self-preservation. Somehow, Shyamalan managed to balance all of that. Another factor I must mention is the soundtrack. It's very distinct and old-fashioned; I can't help but notice it whenever a scene is happening. It's unique and must be appreciated. In many ways, I thought "Signs" is as good or better …

Review - Signs (2002)

After mysterious crop circles show up in former Rev. Graham Hess' (Mel Gibson) fields, strage lights begin appearing around the world. The world is suddenly in a panic over the threat of alien invasion, while Graham, his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) and his children Morgan (Rory Culkin) and Bo (Abigail Breslin) just try to make it through the night alive in "Signs."

I'm not sure which way to critique this film. On one hand it's a very intriguing thriller while on the other hand it's a scary look at how M. Night Shyamalan is slowly becoming the next Edward D. Wood Jr. The story in this film is solid, but the way it follows through and especially the dialogue are at times abysmal. While the acting just saves the lines, it's hard to overlook the obvious, too frequent exposition and …

Could have been a lot better

To be honest I thought this movie could have been a whole lot better. The cast did a great job with what they had to work with, which was to say the least not very much. As I've mentioned before M. Night Shyamalan has really gone off the deep end, and doesn't seem to be surfacing. As mentioned by others Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were both incredible, but his other movies have been falling through the floor.
The religious context in this movie goes a little over the top, but that isn't my biggest complaint.. the aliens aren't that frightening. I actually had people tell me that they were unnerved by the scene with the alien walking out in front of the camera on the news report. Honestly I think that Shyamalans movies should be checked for subliminal context because to me the alien …
