This Swedish teenage lesbian movie is even better than it sounds, though for different reasons. The naturalism of the performances more than compensates for a somewhat heavy-handed polemic - I always thought Sweden to be so liberal, but the hamlet of Anal comes across as a hotbed of teenage prejudice. Ultimately, though, this is a warm and funny look at non conformity in a small town.

A striking story about teenagers and the angst that naturally comes with the territory. What makes this movie special is the true authenticity on display as opposed to the usual American tripe that deals with teens, check that, adults playing 10 years younger. Never once does one feel that these weren't real people but actors playing a role. A major part of that was that it seemed that film was shot using a handy cam which generates a closeness which in turn makes the movie not feel like a movie but a window into these lives.

This is the film that made Lukas Moodysson a household name. I didn't care for Lilya 4 ever that much, but this one was fantastic. By all means I should have disliked this movie, but both leads (brunette and blonde) were fantastic and they conveyed the angst of teenagehood that nearly destroyed me.
