Grand Illusion ( grande illusion, La) review

"Neither you and I can stop the march of time." A film that focuses on the journey of aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin). Plot somewhat difficult to follow and pace sluggish. The score played a huge part of the film and screenplay well written. There are many times where a film is highly acclaimed and included in the best of lists, the movie is no stranger to these beliefs. Unfortunately, this film never appealed to this reviewer. The length would have been unnoticed if there were more interesting things going with the leads, not just babble and move around. Grand Illusion (grande illusion, La) may have been widely recognized and influential, for this rater, it was an average war drama which brings nothing new to the drama coupled with average direction.
