The Exorcist review

Nothing beats the original because it mixes some slight humor, topics on religion, pure evil, beliefs, science/health vs. paranormal activity, sacrifice and family. Viewing this again after being terrified watching for the first time as a kid. It's the type of horror flick that sticks with you. If it has been emulated and parodied (much like the legacy of a Godfather or a Taxi Driver), then you know it is a great film. It's fascinating that it also has elements of humor and about movies itself if one becomes observant with the dialogues. Detective Lieutenant William F. Kinderman (Lee J. Cobb) tries to solve a murder. Christine "Chris" McNeill (Ellen Burstyn) is concerned of er daughter's welfare. Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) tries to heal Regan (Linda Blair).

The haunting score and astounding performances, realistic sets/make-up make this one of the best films of the horror genre. It had countless surprising, chilling and grotesque scenes. The length was suffice since proper character build-up was present. Screenplay was effective with lines: "The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that - do not listen." from Father Merrin, "You go to films, Father Dyer? You like them?" from Lt. Kinderman and "Do you have any religious beliefs?" from the Doctor. The Exorcist has been mentioned countless times in horror related lists, and has been copied and made into pranks. It's the type of film you ill either love or loathe, either way it's impact has been made both in the horror and Hollywood in general.
