Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977) review
One of the major influences of my addiction to movies is Star Wars (aside from my very first viewing of Stand By Me on theaters). I have seen this film on Betamax format when I was a kid. In this digital/Blu-ray/HD age, Star Wars a film released in 1977, was ahead of its time in terms of special effects. There has been much criticism about the Star Wars franchise because of poor dialogue, cheesy scenes and off beat irritating characters like Jar-Jar. Where did this come from? Why the hate on the prequels? How come there are lots of forums analyzing the films? It all boils down to the origin.
Episode I,II,III,V and VI all began with A New Hope (IV).

A local farm boy from Tatooine (with 2 suns, one of many memorable scenery’s) named Luke Skywalker, who feels nothing exciting has happened, accidentally triggers a message from R2D2. C-3PO and R2D2 become one of the most eccentric and funny pairs on screen and a permanent duo for the franchise. “Ben” Obi-Wan Kenobi, an old hermit, enumerates the story of his father, Anakin, was murdered by Darth Vader. He also explains The Force. Vader captures a princess named Leia, who stole plans for a planet destroyer named Death Star. Countless aliens appear before meeting a smuggler and co-pilot named Han Solo and Chewbacca. The characters aforementioned are the only ones you need to know (the wise Yoda, an integral figure on the sequel). In a nutshell, Luke destroys the Death Star by using “the force.” By using “The force,” once can perform telekinesis, clairvoyance, precognition, mind control, have improved speed and reflexes.

Aside from the fancy names of the background characters, intricate wardrobe, special effects for the light sabers/ships/planets/aliens, what makes this book, television series, collectible item, figure, home video, video game, and comic book inspired picture so special? It’s the main characters that pull us in. A lowly boy becomes a hero for the Rebel Alliance, a humorous, princess who blasts at Storm Troopers, a charming pirate like character who is enamored by the princess, a cool but dangerous villain who figure is historic and emulated many times, the ever handy droids and a character who sacrifices his life for the greater good. So many symbolisms, themes of hope and friendship, and heroism can be applied in our everyday life. Several people thought it deserved a Best Picture award. This doesn’t matter because after many decades, it has been scrutinized; merchandise has been selling, countless debates and reviews flow (even this one). All of this started with Star Wars IV: A New Hope back in 1977 thru the creative mind of George Lucas.
