Jurassic World Dominion

Just Because You Could, Doesn't Mean You Should

This review is specifically about the theatrical cut. The director's cut improves on some of the first act's pacing problems.

I've seen a lot of crummy first acts in my time but Dominion's is a true achievement in laziness. It's joyless in an almost deliberate way, contemptuous of its audience and the millions it will make at the box office, like someone had a gun to Universal's head to make this trilogy in the first place. It is an instant shot of adrenaline to the heart when the film's first action scene kicks in and the hidden cabal of people actually excited to work on this film show their hand in a mixed parkour, motorbike, and plane chase scene that is overflowing with fun, speed, and stupidity. From there the film limps to the finish line with occasional bursts of electric-prod induced speed, from an utterly psychotic Therizinosaurus to Steve Jobs having a temper tantrum. It's all mad as a March hare and something resembling a good time, but THAT FIRST ACT JEEEEESSSUUUSSSS!!
