My Life to Live ( Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux )

Tragic and Brutally Honest

Godard tells the tragic story of a woman turned to prostitution to find happiness in a straightforward, evenly divided, documentary style. The film plays a little with differing style (sometimes choosing to capture the most intimate moments in silent, with silent era subtitles as a description), but is mostly a straightforward and sometimes brutally honest portrayal of a young woman's desperation. The film is at its best when it uses visuals and simple performance to explain its themes than when it sometimes drifts away into distracting philosophizing. A good addition to the Godard canon.
