The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Simple and Rich Western

The spark in this classic Western comes from the charisma and character revealed in the leads. John Ford supposedly shot this entire film on a soundstage because of budget constraints, so it is missing the characteristic Western panoramic colorful photography. However, shooting the film on simple sets in simple black and white photography allows the themes, rich dialogue, and character moments to shine through. The film is never boring and often very powerful at times, which says a lot about its story and content.
